"We need to treat the planet as a system, and up until now,
we've operated more as if the world were made of separate parts...
But everything is connected"

This year guests are Carol Ross Barney (Ross Barney Architects) Chicago USA, Anna Puijaner (Maio Architects) Barcelona, and José Manuel Castillo Olea (ARQ911) Mexico City. They will work closely with our students on a challenge in "charrette" mode to rethink architecture practice and to innovate in the design of the built environment.
Past professors included Italian architect Stefano Boeri who designed the Bosque Verticale in Milan and RIBA Gold medalists Grafton Architects among others.

IE Center for Sustainable Cities
Following the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP25) and aware of the relevance of the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, IE School of Architecture and Design has launched the Center for Sustainable Cities, a knowledge hub to address how to ensure sustainable and livable cities for the future.
The Center will focus on climate change and the role of cities, in order to assess current and future risks, make choices and propose new ideas that enhance resilience.
The IE Center for Sustainable Cities will, at first, be a digital space to highlight trends, new ideas, and foster debate and exchange of information on cities. It will include interviews with key global experts, articles by our faculty and other opinion leaders who are researching, studying and proposing ideas for sustainable cities of the future. One such expert is Paul Priestman, founding director and chairman of PriestmanGoode and member of the IE Design Council.
In the context of the COP25 in Madrid and as a founding member of Spain's Global Compact Network, IE organized a series of events to promote sustainability - the "S Factor - by highlighting our ongoing work and members of our community.
Dean Martha Thorne, David Goodman and Cristina Mateo (Associate Deans), and Carmen Panadero (Co-Director of the Master in Real Estate Development) shared complementary approaches to sustainability as related to the built environment, focusing on the role of architecture, density and cities, the transformation of work, and sustainability goals for the new northern part of Madrid.
IE x 12 Resilient Cities
One of the initiatives that we realized during 2019 was our IE x 12 Resilient Cities, a video series focusing on a specific city each month and how it is seeking to become more resilient and be able to adapt to future realities while incorporating goals of sustainability and well-being.
Cem Kayatekin, professor in different programs at IE A&D, talks about New York: a city in which resilience, in one sense, is related to diversity.
Jennifer Durand, Founder @ OVA and Assistant Teacher @ Ricardo Palma University
Jennifer Durand graduated from the Master in Business for Architecture and Design in February 2019. She previously trained as an Architect in Lima (Peru), where she currently lives and enjoys an active and diverse career.
Not long after finishing her undergraduate degree, she started teaching design workshops at Ricardo Palma University in Lima but also wanted to run her own architecture studio. Jennifer realized she needed to learn how to balance the business side in a creative company, with the knowledge from the MBArch she founded her own studio in Lima: OVA (Office of Versatile Architecture), where she applies the managerial and technological skills she honed at IE School of Architecture and Design to her personal situation.
During her Master's degree at IE, Jennifer developed a company with social goals called SAVE (Social Architecture, Versatile and Efficient). Knowing that almost half a million people suffer from the cold in one are of Peru where their houses are not properly insulated, she developed thermal panels made from local materials. SAVE uses a business model that Jennifer calls agents of change, a system that combines the work of low-income residents and the economic strength of companies in collaboration to produce and distribute the needed panels.
"I have grown a lot as a person through my MBArch experience, and I know have the little bug of innovation and entrepreneurship in my veins"
Spotlight on Sustainability
Innovating in Architecture to Reduce the Carbon Footprint.
The impact of urban development and construction on our carbon footprint and on greenhouse gas emissions requires us to take a fresh look at the practices of the entire sector, not just one aspect of the value chain. In this regard, architects can and should play a leading role.
Diego del Alcázar Benjumea, Executive Vice President at IE University, talks to architect Michael Green, founder of MGA and lecturer at IE A&D, about his use of organic carbon-sequestering materials, such as wood and about the need to review building codes.
