#IEFutureTalks: Architects and Designers Ready for the Future

"We live in an era defined by a fundamental shift in the relationship between people and machines. The impacts of technology are complex and are having a profound effect in all fields. Architects and designers need to understand the repercussions of digital disruption and the implications for the spaces we inhabit.

Aware that today the profession must expand its role and go beyond the narrow definitions of the past, IE School of Architecture and Design has launched IE Future Talks, a series of short video interviews with 20 key leaders in the field of design and architecture who describe the skills and talents required for professionals in the 21st century."
The videos feature tips for the future by Pritzker Prize winners Balkrishna DoshiAlejandro Aravena and Richard Rogers, and Faculty, Guest Critics and Design Council members.

Martha Thorne: Empowering Women

Martha Thorne, Dean of IE School of Architecture and Design, gave an interview for urbanNext on women and gender in architecture.

"There are lots of obstacles when one is in a professional career and some, without a doubt, are related to gender. In general, throughout my career I have felt that, as a woman, if you are in a place where most of the recognised people are men, you have to prove yourself on a daily basis. You have to work harder than most men to achieve the same results".

Martha talks about how supporting women should start with education. While gender parity seems to exist, in terms of student numbers at university, she talks about the difficulties that women have to face when starting their professional careers, in terms of salaries, positions and discrimination.
