IE School of Architecture and Design’s lecture series for the academic year 2018-2019 is titled Strategy is__
Strategy is both a point of view and a tool with which to approach complex challenges.
The series of public lectures and events, to be held on both the Madrid and Segovia campuses over the course of the academic year, will bring together leading international architects and designers from diverse backgrounds. Our speakers will share their strategic approach to their work on buildings, new materials, healthcare policy, and cities.

September and October saw IE School of Architecture and Design host the first three Strategy Is_ lectures.
As part of the Hay Festival Segovia on September 21, Lars Lerup, Swedish architect, writer, expert on cities and former Dean at Rice University, shared the stage with Ricardo Devesa, architect and editor-in-chief of Actar Publishers and UrbanNext. On the same day, Kazuyo Sejima, founding partner of SANAA Architects and Pritzker Prize laureate 2010 visited the Design Studio room for a talk with faculty and students before a public roundtable with Laszló Baán, Director of the Museum of Fine Arts of Budapest, and Dean Martha Thorne.
In October Hunter Tura, President and CEO of Bruce Mau Design, opened the 2018-2019 academic year of the Master in Real Estate Development with an inspiring lecture titled From Image to Action.

On the theme of the future of cities and the dramatic speed and scale of urbanization, Cristina Mateo, Executive Director of IE School of Architecture and Design, will discuss the changes to our urban experience brought about by companies such as Amazon, Google, and Apple. The Urban Land Institute (ULI) in collaboration with IE School of Architecture and Design will host a panel discussion (in Spanish) about The Future of Work, Workspace and Challenges (El Futuro del Trabajo, sus Espacios y Retos), as part of the series Young Beers. This series seeks to bring together young professionals and experts.
Guzmán de Yarza, Director of the Master in Strategic Design of Spaces, and Carmen Panadero, Co-Director of the Master in Real Estate Development, will analyze how the architecture of the workplace is changing and the way in which investors, owners, and employers are responding to the new situations.
The conversation, moderated by Alfonso Benavides, professor in the Master in Real Estate Development, will be followed by an informal networking event.

Design Studio, a subject at the core of both programs, is a hands-on-subject where students learn how to tackle problems and propose solutions that range in scale from micro to macro, from the graphic design to projects for cities. The process is about conceptualizing the challenge at hand, researching, collaborating, imagining, proposing, testing, evaluating and proposing again - all with a critical thinking mindset.

BRIEF FESTIVAL
Students from the first and second year of the Bachelor in Design visited the Brief Festival on October 5 and 6 in Conde Duque Cultural Center, Madrid.
Brief Festival is a graphic creation two-day festival featuring a selection of the best designers in the world and seeks to foster excellence among professionals and future professionals and to raise awareness of the important role of the graphic fields in our society.
The students attended more than 16 talks from designers and international design studios like Hey, Pentagram, Saffron, Wasted Rita and Vasco Vicente among others.

Lilly Reich Grant for Equality in Architecture

Laura Martínez de Guereñu, professor in the Bachelor in Architectural Studies, was awarded with the 1st Lilly Reich Grant for equality in architecture for her proposal Re-Enactment: Lilly Reich's Work Occupies the Barcelona Pavilion.
The goal of Laura's project is to thoroughly study the different kinds of architectural elements that Lilly Reich designed for the interior of the Noucentista Palaces in the industrial sections of the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. She will also to trace the history and use of similar elements in the interior of the Barcelona Pavilion.

FRPO: Finalists in the Competition for the Spanish National Pavilion @ Dubai Expo 2020

Professors in the Bachelor in Architectural Studies, and founders and architects at FRPO, Fernando Rodríguez and Pablo Oriol, were announced among the six finalists chosen from 47 participants of the competition to design the Spanish National Pavilion for the Dubai Expo 2020, awarded to Amann-Cánovas-Maruri.
The contest, organized by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), sought proposals that could be used as an example of sustainable construction, with bioclimatic solutions for the extreme climatic conditions of Dubai, in-keeping with the theme of the Expo for 2020: Connecting Minds, Creating Future.
The project, designed by FRPO along with the firm Selgascano, fulfilled the requirements, representing a breathing pavilion with movable inflatables that respond to views, light and breeze. It was designed to be easily removed and transported and made with an ultralight and sustainable materials.

Daniel Canogar, professor in the Bachelor in Architectural Studies, has just opened his new permanent exhibition, Pulse, at the Zachry Engineering Education Complex (Texas A&M University, USA).
Pulse is composed of five curved screens that show an abstract generative animation of multi-colored particles that run along the screens. These particles are created by an algorithm that reacts in real time to data related to the building’s energy consumption.
